About the RM Classification at Royal Canadian Mounted Police

The Regular Member (RM) pay scale covers the uniformed police officers of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, from Constable through Staff Sergeant Major. RCMP Regular Members provide federal policing across Canada and contract policing for eight provinces, three territories, and approximately 150 municipalities that do not maintain their own police service. Constable is the entry rank for nearly every Regular Member career, reached after completing the Cadet Training Programme at Depot Division in Regina. The RM scale does not cover RCMP civilian employees (paid on TBS core public administration scales) or RCMP special-equipment, professional, and police-training categories, which sit on separate RM-* scales.

Constable ($71,191 to $115,350) covers five pay steps reached over roughly four years of service post-graduation from Depot; Step 1 is the initial appointment rate and Step 5 is the senior constable rate. Corporal ($121,691 to $126,311) is the first promotion rank, typically reached after six to ten years of constable service. Sergeant ($133,677 to $137,677) and Staff Sergeant ($146,019 to $150,073) are supervisory ranks at detachment, section, or unit level. Staff Sergeant Major ($150,524 single rate) is the most senior NCO rank; the data here uses a combined rate covering Staff Sergeant Major, Sergeant Major, and Corps Sergeant Major positions, which Appendix A of the agreement treats as a single step.

Since 2019, RCMP Regular Members have been represented by the National Police Federation (NPF), the first union to certify in the RCMP's 150-year history. The current collective agreement is published as TBS Appendix A under the RM Group framework. Rates are typically updated each April. RCMP compensation also includes Service Pay (a tenure-based supplement) and various allowances for shift work, isolated posting, and specialty assignments (police service dog handlers, marine police, etc.) that the base rates do not reflect. Regular Members are covered by the RCMP Superannuation Act pension, which is distinct from the Public Service Pension Plan and the Canadian Forces Superannuation Act.
