About the PH Classification
The PH (Pharmacy) group covers pharmacists employed by the federal government, primarily at Canadian Armed Forces health facilities, Correctional Service of Canada institutions, and Health Canada. PH pharmacists dispense medications, provide pharmaceutical care to patients, manage drug formularies, and advise on medication safety and drug policy. In military settings, PH pharmacists also prepare medications for operational deployments and manage pharmaceutical supply chains for remote operations.
PH-01 covers junior pharmacists and pharmacy residents. PH-02 is the working-level pharmacist providing independent clinical pharmacy services. PH-03 and above cover senior pharmacists, pharmacy managers, and chief pharmacists overseeing pharmaceutical operations for an entire institution or region. All PH positions require a pharmacy degree (PharmD or BScPharm) and licensure from the relevant provincial pharmacy regulatory authority.
Federal pharmacy is distinct from community or hospital pharmacy: military pharmacists may deploy with operations, correctional pharmacists manage complex medication regimens for inmates (including methadone and psychiatric medications), and Health Canada PH employees contribute to drug regulation and safety policy. PH salaries are lower than what pharmacists earn in community pharmacy or hospital settings, but the regular hours, pension, and absence of retail pressure attract pharmacists who prioritize work-life balance and public service.
