About the LS Classification
The LS (Library Science) group covers librarians and information professionals working across the federal government. LS employees manage federal library collections, provide research and reference services to government employees, develop knowledge management systems, and ensure that federal departments have access to the information resources they need. Library and Archives Canada is the largest employer, but virtually every major federal department maintains a specialized library staffed by LS professionals.
LS-01 covers junior librarians and library technicians. LS-02 is the working-level reference librarian providing specialized research support. LS-03 covers senior librarians, collection managers, and library directors. LS-04 is a senior management position overseeing library programs. Most LS positions require a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or equivalent graduate degree from an ALA-accredited program.
Federal librarians play a crucial role that extends beyond traditional library services — they manage access to specialized databases, curate digital collections, support open data initiatives, and provide competitive intelligence services to policy makers. The LS group is represented by PSAC. Federal library employment offers better job security and benefits than many municipal or academic library positions, though the overall number of LS positions has declined as some departments have consolidated or reduced their library services.
